Graded Structural Steel Hollow Sections

It has come to the attention of the Association of Steel Tube and Pipe Manufacturers (ASTPM) that un-graded, commercial quality steel is being supplied into the Structural Hollow Sections in sizes range as defined by SANS 657 Part 1 and also reflected in the SAISC’S Red Handbook. These sizes may be manufactured locally or imported.

The ASTPM therefore strongly recommends that when graded steel is specified by the Engineer for use in Structural Steel Hollow Sections, that the Engineers and fabricators verify that the grade supplied meets the minimum requirements laid down in the design. This can be done by locating the 355 and manufacturer’s logos hard stamped on the tubes at roughly one meter centres and/or requesting test certificates. The hard stamping only applies to “small bore” sizes, as large bore sizes are marked differently on the tubes and labels. The large bore sizes are indelible marked with the steel grade and manufacturer’s logo. Small bore are sizes include Circular Hollow Sections smaller than or equal to 219.1×6, Square Hollow Sections smaller than or equal to 150x150x6 and Rectangular Hollow Sections smaller than or equal to 200x100x6. Larger sizes and thicknesses are defined as large bore.

The standard grade in the Structural range for the industry is S355 and X42 or X52/S355 for the small and large bore sizes respectively.
